FAQs
1. What student
services are available at ASK?
The elementary and middle school each have one full
time counselor. The high school has one full time
counselor for grades 9-11 and one college counselor
for grade 12 students. In the elementary school
there is a reading specialist, a learning support
individual, and an ESL teacher. In the middle school
there is a support person and an ESL teacher. In the
high school there is only one class first semester
for students who need a little extra study time
during the school day.
2. Does ASK have a Special Education program?
ASK is a college preparatory private school and does
not have a full range special education program. The
school’s support services are designed for those
students who we feel may have the ability to
graduate from our high school. There is more support
in the elementary school because we feel we can make
the biggest impact on these students’ learning
habits. As the students progress in grades the
academic support is more and more limited.
3. How are students chosen for the Support
Program?
Admissions In the
elementary school, teachers refer students to the
support service team. This team, which consists of
the elementary counselor, the resource teachers, the
reading specialist, the ESL teacher, the elementary
assistant principal, and the Director of Student
Services, meet weekly. The students referred are
discussed and then a decision is made as to what
would be the most effective means to assist the
student.
In the middle school students are referred by the
core teachers. The core teachers meet weekly to
discuss the progress of their students. Those
students referred for help must be showing the
ability to succeed and can not have behavior issues.
The program is designed for those students who are
serious about achieving their best.
In the high school the program is extremely limited.
It is first semester only and the students chosen
are those who do have the ability to graduate from a
college preparatory school but need just a little
assistance in organization and basic study habits or
in some base information.
4) Is personal counseling available at the school?
All counselors at our school are certified school
counselors. They have been trained to listen and
talk to students who are dealing with personal
issues. Should an issue be serious in nature, the
parent would be contacted and a referral suggested
to a qualified psychologist or psycho-therapist. |
