Welcome to ASK’s 6-12 English Department Site

In the ASK English Department, we focus on the four core strands of language arts: reading, writing, listening, and speaking. To ensure student success in post-secondary education and careers, we require students to take two English courses in grades 6 and grades 9-11, English Literature & Composition and English Language & Composition.

English Literature & Composition focuses on the traditional aspects of an English course with emphasis on the study of literature and writing focused on literary analysis. In English Language & Composition, students are further exposed to expository writing with a strong emphasis on critical reading, grammar/usage/mechanics, and vocabulary.

In grades 7 and 8 students will encounter a balance of literature, non-fiction, writing, grammar/usage/mechanics, and vocabulary in preparation for the rigors of high school. In grade 12, students continue advanced reading and literary analysis as well as maintaining a focus on college preparation through personal narratives.

For students looking to take Advanced Placement courses, we offer Honors English in grades 8-10, Advanced Placement English Language & Composition in grade 11, and English Literature & Composition in grade 12. In addition to regular and advanced English courses we also offer a wide variety of English electives including Creative Writing, Mythology, Film Studies, and Public Speaking.

Students studying English at ASK will be prepared for the academic rigors of colleges and universities around the world as well as future careers. We offer a traditional and rigorous American course of study adapted to our global environment. By exposing our students to a wide variety of literature, genres, and writing styles, we enable students to develop critical thinking and communication skills that will set them on a course of success.

Sincerely,

Jennifer Cradlin
