Welcome to ASK’s 6-12 English Department Site
In the ASK English Department, we focus on the four
core strands of language arts: reading, writing,
listening, and speaking. To further improve
our English program and make sure that students
receive all of the necessary skills capable for
succeeding in university and the world, we require
that students take two English courses in grades 9,
10, and 11: English Literature & Composition and
English Language & Composition.
English Literature & Composition focuses on the
traditional aspects of an English course with
emphasis placed on the study of literature and
writing focused on literary analysis. Through
the English Language & Composition course, students
are further exposed to writing in its many
expository formats and we place a strong emphasis on
critical reading, grammar/usage/mechanics, and
further our study of vocabulary.
In the Middle School curriculum, students are
exposed to a balance of literature, nonfiction,
writing, grammar/usage/mechanics, and vocabulary to
prepare them for the rigors of high school level
English. The Grade 12 curriculum furthers
students' English skills by balancing personal
narrative college preparation with advanced literary
analysis and reading.
Through literature, we hope to foster in students an
appreciation of cultures, as well as a love of
language. We hope to create lifelong readers
who use their analytical skills to think critically
and affect change.
Interpersonal skills are honed through numerous
speaking and listening activities, and writing is
essential in developing intrapersonal skills through
journaling and creative writing, as well as critical
thought through analysis of literature and mastery
of various expository and rhetorical techniques.
Students are assessed in writing through the six
plus one traits of writing - ideas & content,
organization, voice, word choice, sentence fluency,
conventions, and presentation.
We offer a traditional American course of study
adapted to our global environment and our students
are exposed to a wide array of literature, genres,
and writing styles. At the high school level,
we offer Honors English in 10th grade, Advanced
Placement English Language & Composition in 11th
grade, and Advanced Placement English Literature &
Composition in 12th grade.
With the skills taught in the ASK English
Department, our students will be prepared for the
academic rigors of university and a competitive job
market; most importantly they will develop the
intuitive insight necessary to live a fulfilling
life.
Sincerely,
Tara Waudby
