Kindergarten 2 (KG 2)
In KG 2 children experience learning activities
through themes which integrate the key learning
areas of Language Arts, Math, Science, Social
Studies, Art and Music. The children explore
concepts during hands-on centers as part of the
daily routine. A key feature of KG 2 is the
development of beginning reading and writing skills
through reading and writing workshops. Math is
activity based and involves a “hands-on” approach
with the children able to explore manipulatives
which enable the children to develop number sense
and reinforce concepts taught. The main content
areas in mathematics are space and shape, sorting,
graphing, estimating, patterning, numbers, number
operations and problem solving. Free play time
allows children to explore their areas of interest
while developing their social awareness and language
skills. This includes activities such as art,
crafts, blocks/building, dramatic play, writing,
puzzles, number games and early literacy games.
The hours for KG 2 are 7:30 to 1:00 p.m. Bus service
is available. Class size averages 20 children. There
is one teacher and one full-time instructional
assistant in each classroom.
