Kindergarten 1 (KG 1)
Welcome to KG1. These early years are the beginning
of your child's education journey. We focus on
developing a welcoming environment where children
can feel safe to explore and be creative. Music and
inviting activities engage children from the moment
they arrive at school. Children learn new routines
that help develop independence and responsibility
for their belongings and their classroom
environment. Each class has one teacher and two
instructional assistants. KG1 start time is 7:15am.
Students can be dropped off at the classroom no
earlier than 7:00am. KG1 end time is 1:00pm.
Students can be picked up outside on the basket ball
court.
Play is a vital part of our day. Students
demonstrate their true knowledge when it can be done
in an environment that is comfortable to them.
Through play, children care for their babies and
make dinner as mothers and fathers would. They read
and teach to imaginary audiences as a teacher would.
They investigate and experiment as a scientist or
doctor would. They make puzzles and solve problems
as a businessman would. They cook and taste food as
a chef might do.
We begin the year with our unit of inquiry entitled
Me and My Community. This unit helps children
identify the important people in their community
including family, friends, teachers, nannies, or
anyone else significant to the child. This unit also
helps children understand their role as a member of
their family, community, and classroom. Other unit
areas this year will be Life Cycles, Celebrations,
and, Art Attack.
In Math, students will learn about numbers,
measurement, time and space, patterns, shapes,
colors, and probability.
In Language, students will learn pre-literacy skills
such as; letters have sounds, sounds form words, and
words build sentences. They will learn that print
conveys meaning and that there are various forms of
literature. They will learn to sequence story events
and make predictions.
We are looking forward to an exciting, fun-filled
year.
Sincerely,
Connie Hocking
