Grade 3
Welcome to the third grade! We have a wonderful
group of experienced, dedicated teaching
professionals who are working together to make this
year a memorable learning experience for your child.
As teachers, we believe in a learning community that
involves us, you (as parents), the entire school
community and the greater Kuwait community. Since we
are all responsible for the children of our school,
we take great pride in being able to work together.
In the third grade we work hard to develop
independence and critical thinking. Students are
making the transition from learning how to read and
write, to using their reading skills to write about
what they are learning. This is an excellent
opportunity for students to become independent and
take control of their learning experience. Students
are expected not only to learn from their reading,
but to relate to and reflect on the books they are
reading.
In science, students are discovering the difference
between physical and chemical changes. They will
experience different biomes. They will also explore
how simple machines work and understand why the rock
cycle is important. Most of our science is hands on,
so we don’t use a textbook. This is a great chance
for students to develop note taking skills and
really reflect on what they are doing in our
hands-on lab.
We focus on culture and community in social studies
this year . We will start off by looking at our own
culture, interviewing our family and reporting on
what we know about ourselves. Then we look at how
communities and cultures have changed over time. We
finish the year by looking at how economy works in
our culture. At the end of the year, students will
have developed their own product and will market it
at our business fair.
The third grade math program introduces
multiplication and division. We uncover different
ways to look at these new topics and pick a method
that works best for the individual student.
We look forward to working with each student to
develop independent life-long learners, critical
thinkers and responsible citizens.
Sincerely,
Joe Teft
