Grade 2

Welcome to 2nd Grade.
I am honored to welcome you into this very crucial
year of your child’s education! Second grade stands
as a major stepping stone in your child’s journey
through elementary education. Preparing your child
to enter upper elementary with a sold foundation of
knowledge, critical thinking skills, and a variety
of methods in problem solving remain among our
primary goals as educators. During this transitional
year, children grow from emergent readers and
writers into more fluent, expressive, and confident
students in every respect. Our teachers consistently
strive to build your child’s sense of curiosity and
thirst for knowledge.
We seek to help your children grow into independent
thinkers who are excited to take on new challenges,
and we encourage them to become curious, life-long
learners. As a parent, you might start to think it
is time for you to relinquish your educational
responsibilities; nothing could be further from the
truth! Studies show that parent involvement in a
child’s education is a leading contributor to
academic success. YOU were your child’s first
teacher, and you are still his or her most important
guide and role model.
Our faculty and staff believe that learning should
be fun and engaging. We explore areas of interest to
our students, and they are given plenty of
opportunity to express their ideas and expand their
critical thinking skills. All areas of education are
supported by hands-on, interactive activities. We
hold very high expectations for our students,
therefore we expect your child to do his or her best
at all times in every area of school life. When
parents model the importance of school and
education, children are much more likely to value
them as well.
Teachers and students spend a major portion of each
day on reading and writing, regularly integrating
both throughout all subject areas. We explore a
variety of literary genres, and attempt to
positively and consistently motivate the children to
always seek growth and improvement.
An outstanding group of educators comprises our
second grade teaching team, from a variety of
backgrounds, yet all with great love of children,
affection toward teaching, as well as a vested
interest in your child’s success here at school. We
continually strive to create independent thinkers,
self-reliant individuals, and children of integrity
with pride in their achievements. I am very proud of
our team and feel highly confident that the
2009-2010 second grade year will be a very
productive, positive experience for all of us!
Sincerely,
Melissa A. Scott
