Grade 1
Welcome to Grade One at ASK! First grade is a
critical year in a child's academic education, as it
provides the foundation on which much future
learning is built.
In Grade One, we strive to teach with as much
integration as possible. Students are engaged
in learning that is significant to their lives and
that provokes questioning and discovery. Our
goal is that this "real" learning motivates students
to become lifelong learners.
Our Reading and Writing programs aim to meet the
needs and interests of each child, so that all of
our students experience success. Each day,
students are engaged in a variety of literacy
activities that promote the development of strong
reading and writing skills. Throughout the
year, First Grade students will learn about phonics,
sight words, reading with understanding, invented
spelling, sentence structure, descriptive writing,
and story writing.
In Grade One, our Math program fosters learning
through discovery and hands-on activities. We
aim to make
mathematical connections to students' personal
lives, which allow a deeper understanding of the
concepts at hand. Throughout the year students
learn about addition and subtraction strategies,
geometry, fractions, time, money, graphing, and
place value.
Social Studies education in First Grade introduces
students to several elements of life and the world
they live in. They learn about what it means
to be a citizen, and about the roles and
responsibilities they and other members of a
community have. They also learn about the
physical aspects of the world, including landforms
and resources. The world and its many cultures
are celebrated.
In Science, our students are engaged in minds-on and
hands-on activities that encourage them to uncover
facts and make connections to develop a greater
understanding about the world and universe that we
live in. Students engage in learning about
plants, animals, habitats, magnetism, space, and
healthy living.
Above all, our First Grade program aims to teach
students to be responsible, independent, and
motivates life-long learners.
Sincerely,
