i. Awards
Traveling trophy for the first place overall Team
Winner.
Banners for first, second, and third place overall
teams.
Patches for participation.
Banners for participation for all schools.
Certificates of participation for all students.
ii. Points
Teams earn points in the Math Challenge, Spelling
Challenge, Geography Challenge, Academic Bowl (round
robin & ranking) and the Academic Olympiads, but no
points are earned in the Spelling Bee or Geography
Bee. The total points earned by individual teams, or
members of those teams, determines the overall
Academic Games team winner (not school since not all
schools send two teams) .
B. Academic Bowl First Place Team
Students compete on school teams of four or less
players in a round robin event with 15 minute
rounds, with only the championship round lasting 25
minutes
i. Awards
Small plaque for each student on the first place
team in the Academic Bowl.
ii. Team Points
a) Teams earn one point per win in the round robin.
b) The total possible points earned during the round
robin depends on the number of teams competing. If
there are "N" teams taking part, then the total
possible points the first place team could earn
would be "N - 1" points during the round robin.
Example of Point Calculation: Eighteen teams take
part with 17 points being the maximum possible in
the round robin part of the Academic Bowl. N =18,
total possible points the first place team could
earn is (N - 1) or 18 - 1 = 17 during the round
robin.
c) In addition, after the championship rounds all
teams are ranked for points as for the academic
olympiads. The number of points a team earns depends
on the number of teams taking part in the
tournament. If there are "N" teams taking part, then
the first place teams earns "N-1" points; the second
place team earns "N -2" points, the third place team
earns "N - 3" with the last team earning 0 points.
In the event of a tie, teams will share the points.
Example: If there are 18 teams then the first place
team earns 17 points, and if the next two teams tie
for second and third place then they both earn 15.5
points, and the fourth place team would earn 14
points, etc.
d) Overall winning Academic Bowl team determined
during the championship rounds.
e) All team points earned throughout the Academic
Bowl go towards the team's total points for the
Academic Games overall winner.
C. Academic Olympiad First Place Team
The five events in this category require more
higher-level thinking. Teams of four or less
students work together during the 35-60 minute
period to solve a variety of problems which require
the application of skills and knowledge.
i. Awards
Small plaque for each student on the first place
team in the Academic Olympiad.
ii. Team Points
The number of points a team earns depends on the
number of teams taking part in the tournament. If
there are "N" teams taking part, then the first
place teams earns "N-1" points; the second place
team earns "N -2" points, the third place team earns
"N - 3" with the last team earning 0 points. In the
event of a tie, teams will share the points.
Example: If there are 18 teams then the first place
team earns 17 points, and if the next two teams tie
for second and third place then they both earn 15.5
points, and the fourth place team would earn 14
points, etc.
Overall winning Academic Olympiad team determined by
totaling the team points earned in each of the five
Academic Olympiad events. All team adjusted* points
earned during the five Academic Olympiad go towards
the team's total points for the Academic Games
overall winner.
* The varsity academic games are composed of the
academic bowl, five olympiads, spelling challenge, &
math challenge.
D. Math Challenge First Place Team
i. Awards
Small plaque for the student earning first place in
the Math Challenge.
Certificates for second and third place.
ii. Team Points
The number of points a team earns is determined the
same way as for the Academic Olympiads.
A team score will be based on the average of the
individual scores earned by the team. If a team
member does not participate, then a score of 0 is
calculated into the average. All team points earned
during the Math Challenge go towards the team's
total points for the Academic Games overall winner.
E. Spelling Challenge First Place Team
i. Awards
Small plaque for the student earning first place in
the final Spelling Bee, not the Spelling Challenge.
Certificates for second and third place in the final
Spelling Bee.
ii. Points
The number of points a team earns during the
spelling challenge (not the spelling bee) is
determined the same way as for the Academic
Olympiads.
A team score will be based on the average of the
individual scores earned by the team. If a team
member does not participate, then a score of 0 is
calculated into the average. All points earned
during the Spelling Bee go towards the team's total
points for the Academic Games overall winner.
F. Geography Bee Awards
i. Awards
Small plaque for the student earning first place in
the Geography Bee, not the geography Olympiad.
Certificates for second and third place.
ii. Team Points
The number of points a team earns during the
geography olympiad (not the geography bee) is
determined the same way as for the Academic
Olympiads.
G. Determining the Overall Academic Games Team
Winner
a) Each team's total points are determined by points
earned in the round robin, points earned from the
five olympiads (one of which is the geography
olympiad but not the geography bee), points earned
from the spelling challenge (not spelling bee),
points earned from the math challenge, and teams
ranking after the academic bowl championship. This
is a total of 9 events.
NOTE: Art Radtke, at the American School of Dubai,
has the software scoring program for the tournament.
b) Example of Point Calculation
i. Fourteen teams take part with the total for each
event in the example being 91 ( 13 pts for first
place ranking and 0 points for last place), for a
total of 91 X 9 ( total of 9 events) = 819 possible
points in the entire tournament.
EXAMPLE:
a) Sample for Entire Tournament: Team A wins every
round in the round robin and earns 13 points (N -
1). Team A also comes in first in the championship
rounds so is ranked 13th (N - 1) for 13 pts and then
places first in the 5 olympiads, the math challenge
and the spelling challenge for 13 pts each for a
total of 104 pts (8 events X 13pts). Total score is
then 104 + Rd Robin pts of 13 for a total of 117
pts.
b) Sample for Round Robin & Championship Academic
Bowl Rounds:
Team B wins 12 rounds in the round robin and earns
12points. Team B comes in second in the championship
rounds so is ranked so is ranked 12th for 12 pts.
Team C wins 11 rounds in the round robin. Total pts
11. Also comes in third in the finals so is ranked
11 for 11 pts
Team D wins 10 rounds in the round robin. Total pts
10. Also comes in fourth in the finals so is ranked
10 for 10 pts
Team 9 wins 9 rounds in the round robin. Total pts
9. Not in finals and ranks 9 from the rd robin for 9
pts
Team loses all rds in the round robin. Total pts 0.
Not in finals and ranks 0 from the rd robin for 0
pts
So tournament is Rd Robin pts (13 to 0) + Ranking
after championship (13 to 0) + 5 olympiads, the math
challenge and the spelling challenge(13 to 0 each)
or 9 events X 13 for a total of 117 based on 14
teams.
