EMAC VARSITY ACADEMIC GAMES HISTORY
The first Varsity Academic Games took place in April
of 1994 and were jointly hosted by the American
School of Dubai and Abu Dhabi Community School and
there were only four teams and sixteen students. The
tournament lasted just one afternoon but everyone
enjoyed the experience and it was decided that the
varsity Academic Games would become an official EMAC
tournament. The following year three schools
expressed an interest in taking part but by April of
1995 the tournament was down, once again, to two
schools...........the American School of Dubai and
Abu Dhabi Community School. After this tournament
the coaches from the two schools decided to add the
academic Olympiad events to the tournament so there
could be a full day of challenges including the
academic bowl, math challenge and spelling bee in
future tournaments. The tournament in April 1996
suddenly grew to 12 teams and 48 students and lasted
three days with the Olympiad being the more popular
events. Since 1996 the number of teams taking part
has usually been the maximum of eighteen teams and
seventy two students.
